United's Reserves ensured Hartlepool would have to wait a little longer to clinch the league title after beating them 3-1 at Whitley Park yesterday.

Pool went into the game unbeaten in the league and needing just a point to win the title, but second-placed United closed the gap in a disappointing encounter spoiled by strong wind.

The visitors had claims for a first-minute penalty waved away when Stephen Carson tumbled and a minute later they trailed when Bradley Orr found the net with a neat finish after good work from Alan O'Brien on the left wing.

Four minutes later Michael Bridges made it 2-0 with his first goal in a United shirt since his switch from Leeds, rifling past visiting keeper Dmitri Konstantopolous after a long ball over the top from Robbie Elliott.

Ex-Newcastle striker Paul Robinson, who Ruud Gullit famously preferred to Alan Shearer in a crunch Tyne-Wear derby five years ago, had a shot blocked on nine minutes as Pool tried to respond. …
