Billy Mitchinson continued his recent good form by beating a field of 40 in the Ryton Triathlon Hilly 21-mile TT at Belsay.

Mitchinson finished 50 seconds clear of unseeded Jon Sturman, with former cyclo-cross expert Rob Bee in third.

Another successful weekend of racing also saw youth riders from all over the country converge on the Hetton Circuit.

A three-stage race preceeded the North East round of the BC National Youth Circuit Series in which 75 riders put on a show for the appreciative crowd.

Over 18 laps of the 1.8km circuit, 33 youngsters showed they are the stars of the future with an average race pace of 37kph to cross the finish line in 52 minutes 32 seconds. Mark Bateman, victor in the Sunderland Clarion Spring Circuit event last month, won the prime with a superb sprint clear four laps from the finish.

Jonathon Bellis managed to overhaul his rivals in a last-lap gallop to take victory and maximum points in this season's BC National Youth Series. A close second by a bike length was Bateman and third was Mark McNally.

There were 34 riders in the prologue one-lap opener to the first year event, and Team Scottish Provident Isle of Man showed their strength in depth to take the overall team prize from Hetton Hawks.

Category A: 1 Jonathan Bellis (Manx Road Club); 2 M Bateman (Triangle Biachi RT); 3 M McNally (Liverpool Century RC)

With another tight bunch finale in Category B, Alex Aldham-Breary made up for his disappointment in losing the prime to take the winner's flag ahead of Joss Bently and Mark Christian. Christian had earlier pipped Aldham-Breary for the prime after he eased up before the line to be denied a race double.
