National scheme honours

Britain's best parks have been officially recognised ( and five are ours.

The Civic Trust has awarded green flags, the equivalent of blue flags for the top beaches, to the country's best parks.

And for the first time, an official website containing all their details is available at .

The site also gives details of a number of Easter events in the parks and green spaces like Benwell Nature Park and Gosforth Central Park in Newcastle; Hexham Parks in Tynedale; Mowbray Park in Sunderland and Riverside Park in Chester-le-Street ( all on the Civic Trust list.

The website was launched by the Green Flag Award scheme, which sets a national standard for parks and green spaces, and which is managed by the Civic Trust, the Commission for Architecture and Built Environment, to recognise the value of green spaces to communities, particularly in urban areas.
