The Newcastle Diamonds go into this weekend's Premier Trophy matches against Glasgow without a recognised No. 1 rider as new signing Kristian Lund has international commit-ments for Denmark.

Lund (19) agreed to rejoin the Diamonds despite having been shown the door by the club 11 months ago after being caught up in the shuffle that brought fellow countryman Bjarne Pedersen back to Tyneside.

With the doubling-down system of last year now consigned to the history books and the disappointing displays of Mario Jirout leading to an early exit, Lund is regarded by co-promoters Darryl Illingworth and George English as the best available bet to boost Newcastle's scoring power.

English said: "Reports from Denmark suggest he is an in-form rider and that's why he was chosen for his country this weekend for a meeting in Germany.

"Because Kristian comes in on a nine-point assessed average we are not allowed to use a guest rider in his place, so all we can do is share his rides under the rider replacement scheme. …
