Blow for McCarthy as England Worry over Boro Star

Colin Cooper's hopes of helping Sunderland to promotion were dashed last night when the defender was forced to cut short his loan spell.

The former England international last month agreed to join the Black Cats from Middlesbrough until the end of the season and watched them play at Wimbledon last night. But Boro defender Gareth Southgate, who is hoping to be part of England's Euro 2004 squad, injured a knee in training yesterday, which has threatened to bring a premature end to his campaign.

With Rio Ferdinand sitting out a ban this summer, Southgate's injury may also further weaken Sven-GUran Eriksson's central defensive options should it prove difficult to shake off. Meanwhile Boro boss Steve McClaren moved quickly to bring the 37-year-old Cooper back to Teesside.

Cooper, who faces an uncertain future, with his Boro contract expiring this summer, failed to start a game for Sunderland and has left with only three substitute appearances to his name. …
