GNER to Roll out Wireless Internet Services

North train company GNER has become the first rail business in the UK to roll out wireless internet services.

The York-based company, which runs trains on the East Coast Main Line from Edinburgh to London, has teamed up with Swedish hi-tech group Icomera to provide the service, which will give passengers with laptop computers access to the internet and emails without needing cables.

By the end of the year, GNER will have fitted the satellite-based system to the first 10 of its rebuilt "Mallard" electric trains, as they enter passenger service on a rolling basis between London King's Cross, the North-East and Scotland.

The on-board wireless internet ( or "wi-fi" ( service will be available from this summer.

It will be free to GNER's First Class passengers or u4.95 an hour for Standard Class travellers.

GNER hopes that wi-fi will enable it to steal a march on low-cost airlines in the highly competitive business travel market between the North-East and London.
