Gateshead Thunder have taken the unusual step of issuing a club statement following the loss of key forward Carl Stannard earlier this week.

Thunder, who take on Barrow Raiders in their final Arriva Trains Cup northern group match at the Thunderdome this afternoon, have moved to quell unrest on the terraces.

Stannard, signed following his release from York City Knights, had been one of Gateshead's top performers in what has been another disappointing campaign so far.

But the 24-year-old did not sign a contract and has moved to LHF Healthplan National League One outfit Doncaster Dragons.

This prompted prompting Gateshead to respond, on their own website, "While registering for Gateshead Thunder Carl did not sign the contract he was offered on more than one occasion.

"In March he asked for improved terms and conditions. The club agreed to pay the terms that Carl requested and these were accepted verbally. …
