Second-placed Liverpool proved too powerful for the youngsters of Sunderland, winning by 2-0 at Durham last night.

Sunderland with seven current members of the Under-19 side and when first-teamers Marcus Stewart and Jeff Whitley were substituted at half time, the second half side was entirely composed of teenagers.

They gave an encouraging display but two clinical finishes by the Merseysiders showed the essential difference between the two sides and eventually decided the outcome.

The first half saw strikes by Ian Mellor and Florent Sinama-Pongolle well-saved by Sunderland keeper Ben Alnwick but Sunderland's John Toft went closest to scoring in the half, hooking Niall Flynn's set-piece against the bar just before the break.

It was still goalless at half time but on 51 minutes, the 17 and 18-year-old back four were caught out by a quickly taken free-kick by Sinama-Pongolle.

It put Ian Mellor in the clear and the powerful front man drove a superb finish wide of Alnwick. …
