NOW that Tesco has announced record profits of [pounds sterling]1.7 billion, perhaps it will be able to proceed to rebuild south London's last remaining ice rink, whose fate has become a cause celebre among Britain's former Olympic figure skaters such as Robin Cousins and Jayne Torvill.

Tesco is involved in a long-running battle to replace Streatham Ice Rink, which, after 67 years, is rapidly reaching its sell-by date, but only if it is incorporated within a modern leisure centre combined with its own new supermarket.

Although the [pounds sterling]100 million scheme has been given the go-ahead by Lambeth Council, it has been rejected by the Mayor, Ken Livingstone, who insists the ice rink and pool should be completed before the new store.

"Livingstone's plan will delay the whole scheme and we will be left without an ice rink," says Trevor Hutton, who is organising a petition in support of the Tesco plan.
