Gardens to Remember the Community Heritage

People in Eston are passionate about celebrating the area's rich mining heritage.

Now plans are taking shape to create a community heritage garden in the town.

Eston Residents' Association started planning the community garden early last year.

The chosen site is a piece of currently untidy land in a gap between buildings on the High Street near Eston Institute.

"It will help to improve the look of the town and give pride in the area," said Emily Gregory, of the residents' association.

The association contacted Redcar and Cleveland Council with their proposal and were told the land had been handed back to the Crown.

Further investigation by the group resulted in the Crown offering no objections to their plans, as long as they have public liability insurance.

Designs for seats, ornate lamps and a central focal point inspired by Eston's rich ironstone heritage have been drawn up.

And ideas for the garden are now being gathered, with the residents' association keen to involve the local community by seeking ideas and views on what could be included. …
