Three past champions of the Open Seat Godo were involved in first-round matches yesterday, but only two of them were winners.

Number 13 Gaston Gaudio, of Argentina, and unseeded American Todd Martin advanced at the claycourt event while Spanish wild card Albert Montanes ousted countryman Albert Costa, the 14th seed.

Gaudio, who won this tournament two years ago, cruised past Dutchman Raemon Sluiter 6-3 6-3 and Martin overcame Spain's David Ferrer 6-4 6-7 (8/10) 6-4.

Gaudio next faces Germany's Alexander Popp, a 6-4 6-2 winner over Spain's Albert Portas.

Martin takes on third seed David Nalbandian in the second round.

In 1998, he became the first American to claim this title since Herbert Flam in 1957.

Costa fell to Montanes 6-4 7-6 (7/3). Montanes, who two weeks ago appeared in his second career ATP final in Valencia, will now meet wild card Nicolas Almagro.

An 18-year-old from Murcia, Almagro beat Alex Corretja 3-6 6-3 6-4 for his second win over the Barcelona native in as many meetings. …
