Murray Hill Library Back in Business; Branch Reopens after $359,000 Renovation

Tere Garren named her children after book-related characters, so it's not surprising they were among the first in line for the reopening of the Murray Hill branch library.

The branch closed last July for a $359,000 remodeling project funded with Better Jacksonville Plan money. It reopened last week, and for patrons, it was cause to celebrate.

"I am so excited," said Garren, who lives a few blocks away and walks to the library at 918 Edgewood Ave. S. "I told the kids we get to go to the library again, and they were thrilled."

There was a festive atmosphere as residents returned to their neighborhood library, bedecked with yellow and blue balloons, to check out its new book titles, try out its new furniture and surf the Web or play interactive games on its 16 computers.

"The library seems more open now," Garren said as she looked around the light-filled room. She was one of several who praised the improved lighting, saying it had illuminated the facility's once dark corners.

"You can feel the windows in every part of the library now," she said.

As her children munched on cookies, pretzels and sodas, she talked about the family's affinity for books.

Six-year-old Scout was named after Scout Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird and 4-year-old Harper after Harper Lee, the book's author. Eight-year-old Wiley is the namesake of pilot Wiley Post, who died in a plane crash with Will Rogers and wrote Around the World in Eight Days, not to be confused with Jules Verne's Around the World in Eighty Days.

Months ago, the Garren children had read the 25-book minimum set by Duval County School Superintendent John Fryer. But Wiley, in particular, is a prolific reader who has devoured 92 books this school year and counts Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events as favorites.
