Angling: Weather Puts Dampener on Better Catches

At last the boat season seems to have started - unfortunately the weather conditions since Monday have spoilt that.

Before the North Easterly arrived, we had boats all along the coast reporting much improved catches.

The majority of the fish are cod and average between three and five pound.

Daylights and hokis, jiggers baited with rag, lug, squid, mussel and fish strip have all taken.

There are also a few ling around but nothing of any great size yet.

The best of the catches have been within two miles off shore.

The best cod reported from a boat fishing off St Mary's Island was eight pounds.

Two Ashington anglers, Steve Gibson and Davey Eastlake, fished half a mile off Church Point at Newbiggin and between them took 14st of cod, averaging 3-4lb. The best of 7lb was taken on the lures already mentioned.

The Tyne charter boat Sarah JFK, skippered by Alan Skinner, had 70 fish aboard on one session. The best was a cod of 12lb, but there were also a few ling to 7lb, a couple of catfish and a couple of haddock. …
