Dambuster's DFC Goes Up for Sale

The medals of a Geordie who flew with 617 Squad-ron, the Dam-busters, were going under the hammer today.

And they were expected to fetch thousands of pounds.

Ivan Whittaker flew as the flight engineer of a Lancaster bomber on the raid led by Wing Commander Guy Gibson on May 16, 1943, to bomb the dams in the Ruhr Valley in Germany.

He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and went on to have a long career in the RAF, retiring as Group Captain in 1974. He died in 1979.

In 1962 he received an OBE and his medals were today being auctioned by Spink's in London. As well as the OBE and DFC, Group Captain Whittaker's collection includes a 1939-45 Star, Air Crew Europe Star, Italy Star, Defence Medal and a War Medal.

The lot is expected to reach pounds 14,000 and also features Dambusters memorabilia.
