Pupils in Middlesbrough will soon be able to communicate with children in other countries thanks to new video technology.

Video-conferencing facilities will be in every secondary school in the town by the end of this month thanks to pounds 93,000 from the Learning and Skills Council.

Teachers are planning to use the technology to set up lessons with other schools in the town, the country and in Europe.

John Bate, headteacher at Acklam Grange, a specialist college in maths and computing, said the school would be able to build on lessons using technology available in the City Learning Centre, at the school.

He said: "Video-conferencing allows us to have live lessons from other places and allows us to exchange with other schools.

"We have had a class in history who were able to talk to a World War One veteran in another place - it brings learning alive."

He said the facilities would save time and money on travel to conferences and help with staff training as well as improving standards in schools. …
