Small and medium-size businesses are most at risk from a new internet virus known as Sasser, experts warned yesterday.

Unlike most viruses which are transmitted through emails and attachments, Sasser spreads to computers directly from the internet.

The virus which came to light in the past couple of weeks is thought to have infected about 2,000 computers so far, although some estimates say as many as one million machines could have been hit.

It attacks recent versions of Microsoft Windows, such as Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP, and causes computers to slow down and crash.

MBNA `winning'

US credit card firm MBNA is believed to be winning the auction to buy internet bank Egg, it was reported yesterday.

The group is expected to table an offer for insurance giant Prudential's 79pc stake in the business of slightly above Egg's 160p a share flotation price.

If MBNA does go ahead with an offer above this level, it would value Egg at more than pounds 1. …
