Shola Ameobi has pledged that Newcastle United will get their usual away goal in Europe tonight.

The young striker knows that if they can maintain their excellent goal record away from St James' Park then United could be very much in business tonight.

You have to go back to October 2002 to find he last time United failed to score on their travels in Europe when they lost 2-0 in the Champions League to Juventus in the Alpi Stadium - a game in which Alan Shearer had what should have been a perfectly good goal disallowed because Kieron Dyer was offside.

Since then United have scored in 10 successive away games in Europe and Ameobi goes into tonight's match with nine goals and just as many blisters - a total of goals only Alan Shearer himself with 17 and Wynn Davies with 10 can beat.

After completing his preparations Ameobi told me today: "I'm sure we will get some chances tonight and I feel sure that we will be able to take them. …
