Hatches Bring out the Best from the Lakes

There have been some magnificent hatches of olives this last week and these, coupled with flurries of hawthorn flies, have brought the fish on to the take providing great sport across the region's fisheries.

Don Thompson of Bishop Auckland, fishing a Pink Nomad, had the biggest fish of the week at Jubilee Lakes - a trout of 14lb 13oz.

There were three other doublers taken this week at the Lakes. Neil Tate of Evenwood had a 14-pounder; Laurie Robb of Doncaster had a fish of 11lb 9oz and Stuart O'Dell of Stanhope had one of 10lb 13oz.

There was good sport at Langley Dam this week. A good number of brown trout were caught and released. The best fish this week, a 10-pounder, was taken by Steven Maughan of Rowlands Gill. A Jenkins had five for 15lb 4oz.

The fishery will be closed during the day on Sunday for a club booking but evening tickets will be available from 5pm onwards.

Whitton Castle Lakes are fishing well with the best sport to be had at the top of the water.

W Stead of Blyth had a fish of 8lb 8oz, the best of the week, and both Grant Hughes, of Stanley, and Neil Young, of Ashington, had fish of 7lb 12oz in their bags.

Gary Thompson, of Consett, fishing a sporting permit safely returned a 10-pounder. The rivers Wear and Tees both had lifts of water and Steve Thow had a lovely brown trout of 2lb 8oz from the Vinovium beat and club members report sea trout being taken off the Tees.

Resident brownies are cruising the margins at Sharpley Springs with plenty rainbows and blues also in evidence. Daddies, midge, olives, beetles, hawthorns and sedge are all on the menu and surface sport is correspondingly excellent.

There have been plenty of specimen fish with the biggest, an 18-pounder, caught by John Oliver from Tyne and Wear with Ted Ashman, a regular from Houghton-le-Spring taking home a cracking 17lb 6oz rainbow and one at just over 5lbs, caught on a Cat's Whisker. …
