Rule Hits Ryder Cup Side

Lee Westwood has hit out at the European tour for the rule which has led to Swedes Jesper Parnevik, Carl Pettersson and Mathias Gronberg all counting themselves out of the Ryder Cup in September.

And England's Luke Donald may join them.

Parnevik, a member of the last three sides, and his two compatriots have decided to concentrate on the US Tour and will not commit themselves to 11 European Tour events as required for Ryder Cup eligibility - even as wild cards.

To the relief of captain Bernhard Langer Sergio Garcia, Alex Cejka and Fredrik Jacobson have now confirmed they will meet the criteria, but Donald is weighing things up and Westwood thinks it wrong that they have been put in such a position.

"The last time I checked the Ryder Cup was between Europeans and Americans, not the European tour and the US PGA Tour," said Westwood. "If you ask Jesper where he is from he will say Sweden, while Luke Donald considers himself English, plays out of England and has an English flag on his golf bag. …
