Newcastle Vipers coach Rob Wilson hailed versatile Simon Leach after the former Whitley Warrior committed himself to another season at the club.

Leach, one of the players of last season, is returning for a fourth crack at the British National League along with David Longstaff and Jonathan Weaver, with Wilson's first three signings the core of his North East contingent.

Leach has spent the bulk of his Vipers career on the blue line, having been signed as a forward.

And Wilson, often his line-mate, believes Leach has become one of the best defencemen in a league dominated by imported defencemen.

"Simon had an excellent year last season," said Wilson, "and I wanted to get this done and dusted as soon as possible.

"He's another player from the North East and it's good to get these players in the team.

"Simon was one of the best defenceman in the league over the course of the season and his vision on the ice is better than 90% of imports. …
