A young child died and another was being treated in hospital today after a house blaze, the fire brigade said.

Fire crews were called at around 11.30 yesterday and quickly put out the blaze in the terraced house in Ashford, Kent, but the boy, believed to be four years old, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A girl, thought to be aged seven, was taken to hospital suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation, while two adults were being treated for shock.

Long protest

AN ANTI-war protester who has been camped outside the Houses of Parliament for nearly three years was arrested today and his extensive protest display dismantled. Brian Haw, 55, of Redditch, Worcestershire, was being held on suspicion of obstruction and assaulting a police officer.

Rescue bid

A FATHER frantically tried to save two children after they fell into a water tank while playing in a factory with friends. Lisa Regan, nine, died later in hospital at Colne, Lancs, but John Murphy, six, was treated and allowed home. …
