Shear Agony as Big Al Takes the Blame

Skipper Alan Shearer held his hands up and took the blame for Newcastle United's failure to beat relegated Wolves at St James' Park yesterday.

But Shearer added that it will be the away form that's to blame should United fail in their quest for a fourth-place finish.

Shearer's 80th-minute spot kick was well saved by Paul Jones with the score balanced at 1-1, and the draw means United now have to win at Southampton and Liverpool if they are to pinch a Champions League berth.

Shearer was bitterly disappointed with yesterday's result but he still faced the media after the game to say: "I take full responsibility for the failure to take three points - but that's the territory with taking penalties. It was a big chance for us, but we didn't take it and it completes a miserable week for us after losing to Manchester City and Marseille and now not beating Wolves.

"It has been a tiring week, but we can't make that as an excuse and we know it won't wash with the fans. …
