Bloodstock breeders may not be in love with stayers, but the public certainly take them to their hearts - as witnessed by Persian Punch.

Another old favourite will be in action tomorrow when Millenary takes his chance in the Emirates Airline Yorkshire Cup on the final day of York's Dante meeting.

John Dunlop's 2000 St Leger winner made a creditable seasonal reappearance when third to French raider Risk Seeker in the Sagaro Stakes at Ascot last month.

Since his Doncaster success, Millenary has scored on three further occasions, all over a mile and a half, and his turn of foot could be decisive tomorrow.

With the bulk of the field made up of Ascot Gold Cup hopefuls, there has to be a chance the trip of a mile and three-quarters will have several of them struggling to quicken in the closing stages, leaving Millenary to swoop and land the spoils.

It will not prove easy, as his rivals include last year's impressive Gold Cup hero Mr Dinos, the smart but fragile Alcazar, Highest, who has gone well fresh previously, and the lightly-raced Shanty Star, who was last seen in June when winning the Queen's Vase at Royal Ascot.

But the veteran Millenary can prove he is up to it.

Duke Of Venice was a useful performer last season for Mark Johnston, winning with any amount in hand in a Sandown maiden, but was slightly disappointing when only 10th to Milk It Mick in the Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket.

Set a straightforward task on his debut for Godolphin at Doncaster earlier in the month, Saeed bin Suroor's charge made no mistake, and he gave the impression that he would come on a bundle for the outing.

Connections have not set their sights too high in aiming at the Michael Seely Memorial Glasgow Stakes and if his entry in next month's Derby is anywhere near the mark, Duke Of Venice should revel in the step-up in distance. …
