Prisoners Volunteer to Help MS Sufferers

Prisoners are helping a therapy centre threatened with closure to get out of jail.

The Gazette reported how the MS Centre at South Bank faced closure because of a lack of volunteers to run it.

After the story appeared the centre was inundated with offers of help, comfortably securing its future.

Now it has emerged that among those volunteering were inmates from Kirklevington Grange Prison near Yarm.

From June 1, inmates will be allowed out on day release to attend the centre and help with running it.

Phil Barker, the centre's fundraising manager and a former policeman, said: "The prison will be sending volunteers who are people coming close to their release date.

"They would like someone to come every day and help out, either with things like operating the decompression chamber or just with the general day-to-day running.

"We've put the idea before the charity's board of trustees and they were absolutely delighted with the offer. …
