THERE is nothing more irritating than seeing the house you sold a few years ago soar in value by thousands of pounds.

But for Tony and Cherie Blair it must be even more galling. The home they sold in 1997 for [pounds sterling]615,000 has now gone on the market for [pounds sterling]1.69 million - almost a threefold increase. The desirable Islington property offers stylish accommodation over four floors, including three reception rooms, a sun room, and six bedrooms.

The kitchen has slate worksurfaces and glass doors onto the garden; there is detailed cornicing, working shutters and original fireplaces; and Philippe Starck fittings in the guest lavatory.

One bedroom was converted into a study - perhaps Blair worked there on his New Labour project - and the kitchen featured in a Labour Party election broadcast. The Blairs spent about [pounds sterling]20,000 on improvements.

But the home was burgled five times in 16 months, and after the election the new Prime Minister's protection officers decided it would cost millions to make secure. …
