A trip to the new tip will have to wait for people in Redcar and Cleveland.

It was hoped the borough's new 'household waste recycling centre' at Carlin Howe Farm near Guisborough would open last month.

But residents arriving to leave their rubbish have been met with locked gates - and are likely to for some time.

A council spokesman said that work is under way to expand the proposed tip.

And until that work is completed, it will remain closed - probably until after the summer.

This means people will have to use the recycling centre at Warrenby near Redcar, although its popularity - and lack of an alternative - has meant some lengthy queues at peak times in recent weeks.

A council spokesman confirmed that the Carlin Howe tip's planned April opening was shelved because the prospect of creating a bigger site was identified.

And while no new date has been arranged, he admitted it is not likely to open until after the summer. …
