Smoked Fish Survive despite Boiling Conditions

Three goldfish almost had their chips when fire swept through a Teesside bedroom.

But thanks to quick-thinking firefighters, the tank-bound trio lived to swim another day.

The alarm was raised in Wilton Avenue, Dormanstown, at around 7.15pm yesterday when a fire started in an upstairs bedroom.

The fire - believed to have been sparked by an electrical fault - was quickly dealt with by firefighters.

And they even had time to save 2-Tone, Fat Dude and Biggy - three fish whose water was by now getting distinctly hot!

Today, burned electrical equipment and a blackened fish tank, complete with coloured gravel and mini plastic trees, could be seen in the front garden.

Sandra Varley, who lives in the house with husband Terry and son Troy, 19, said the fire broke out in Troy's bedroom.

She said: "The fire alarm went off and I thought it was the one downstairs at first, but then I realised it was upstairs.

"Then I saw the smoke coming from Troy's room. …
