Cleveland Fire Brigade could become part of a regional fire and rescue service within the next two years.

The idea of a regional service has already been considered by the North East Fire and Rescue Regional management Board.

Now it is on the agenda for tomorrow's meeting of the Cleveland Fire Authority.

Backing for the creation of a regional fire service has already been given by fire authorities in County Durham, Northumberland, and Tyne and Wear.

But the Cleveland Fire Authority is expected to simply note the position tomorrow and wait further details on the implications and benefits of moving to a regional fire and rescue service.

Authority officers are reporting to tomorrow's meeting: "In essence the three fire authorities of Durham, Tyne and Wear and Northumberland have agreed to the establishment of a regional fire and rescue service.

"As yet the financial, organisational and service implications of making this change do not appear to have been worked out. …
