He said: "I had no idea you could go abroad for treatment. If I could get the same operation in Europe for nearly half the price I'd definitely go for it.

"I developed a hernia problem about a year ago and it's now got to the stage where it's affecting my everyday life.

"I do a lot of running and it's stopping me training which is really frustrating.

"I tried to get treatment on the NHS and was told I might have to wait about six months to see a consultant and get the surgery done.

"Because I couldn't wait any longer I decided to go private and it's already cost me pounds 100 for a consultation and pounds 400 for a scan.

"The operation itself is going to cost pounds 2,000 which will really hit me hard. …
