Shola ameobi is desperate to follow Newcastle United team-mates Kieron Dyer, Jonathan Woodgate and Jermaine Jenas into the senior England team.

Ameobi, now too old for the Under-21 team, is enjoying a break away from football this summer while Dyer is with Sven-Goran Eriksson's England squad in Manchester ahead of the European Championships in Portugal later this month.

Jonathan Woodgate would have made the squad had it not been for his injury, while Jermaine Jenas also had a chance, and Ameobi wants to swell the Magpies' England contingent to four next season.

The 22-year-old, who ended last season with a best-ever haul of 10 goals, hopes to play a part in their forthcoming World Cup qualifying campaign.

But Ameobi faces stiff competition, with Manchester United's pounds 7m new boy Alan Smith and Tottenham Hotspur striker Jermain Defoe not even in the final Euro 2004 squad.

"I want to play as much as I can for Newcastle next season and I would love to be involved in the World Cup qualifiers for England," said Ameobi. …
