Sale of Fugitive's Home Is Shelved

Article excerpt

Fugitive thief Veronica Crouth's home was today at the centre of controversy after an attempt to put it up for sale was knocked back.

The property, which had been shared by Crouth and her partner, David, was set to go for sale by auction.

But 24 hours after the Chronicle alerted the unsuspecting estate agent about the history of the property, the firm put the sale on hold.

Estate agent Keith Pattinson said: "We have contacted the owner abroad who has said he is the sole owner and wants to sell. We have put the house auction on hold while further inquiries are made with his solicitors."

A guide price of between pounds 245,000 and pounds 285,000 had been put on the detached three-bedroom property in Richmond Way, Barnes Park, Cramlington.

Chronicle inquiries revealed the house had been in joint names on the mortgage. A bid to raise cash on the property got under way as an international police hunt continued for Crouth, more than a year after she skipped bail in Hong Kong.

One of her Tyneside victims, Dr Neil Lloyd-Jones of the University Medical Centre, Claremont Road, Newcastle, said: "We haven't received a penny back of that money.

"We'd go through the civil courts to get it, but she's disappeared and it would take more time and money at this stage to find her."

Solicitors for the Newcastle doctors successfully applied for an order to be placed with the Land Registry, known as a caution, requiring that no dealing on the house and land could be made without the victims being informed. …
