Michael Chopra could start next season away from St James' Park on loan, with the Newcastle United striker anxious to kick-start his career.

The England Under-21 international's contract runs out in a year's time and Chopra is desperate to make a breakthrough at St James'.

But the 20-year-old, privately frustrated at his lack of first-team opportunities despite Craig Bellamy's absences last season, believes he would benefit more from another spell on loan rather than playing for the Magpies' reserves with his career at such an important stage.

Chopra could be sent on a half-season loan from the start of next term, and return for the rest of the campaign to challenge Sir Bobby Robson's first-choice strikers.

The Gosforth-born player has Alan Shearer, Bellamy and Shola Ameobi, not to mention Lomana LuaLua and makeshift striker Kieron Dyer, ahead of him in the queue for a place in the team.

And Robson could buy another forward this summer, though Michael Bridges has not won a permanent contract after his own loan spell. …
