It was always likely that the recent D-Day 60th anniversary events would focus people's attention of how we, today, treat the people who took part in that historic event.

For a region with such a long and distinguished military tradition, the North-East does not emerge from the exercise with great credit.

All but 11 of the 410 local authorities in England and Wales disregard the cash given to injured veterans when calculating council tax and housing benefit.

Of these 11, seven are in the North-East.

Campaigners say war pensioners and widows are as much as pounds 170 worse off than in areas which disregard such payments and label the system an outright betrayal of ex-servicemen.

It is hard to argue with the latter.

It is clear that, these days, everything has a price and very few things have a value any more but, surely, we are not this far down that road.
