A new investment partner and a new airline deal give Teesside International Airport a year to remember, says the airport's managing director Hugh Lang.

What a difference a year can make to an airport. When last year's North-East Top 200 supplement was published, Teesside International Airport had just signed an agreement for Peel Holdings to become the long-term strategic partner with the area's councils ( and we had also just clinched the deal with bmibaby to become the airline's fourth UK base.

Through those two crucial events we are now able to celebrate our 40th anniversary as a civil airport with unparalleled development and expansion ( and more to come.

Most encouraging, all our customers ( passengers, airlines and tour operators ( can now see that we really mean business. The investment coming through is making a difference, both to the appearance and capacity of our airport and the quality of service we can provide.

Take, for example, the impact of the first phase of our pounds 20m investment programme planned for the next five years.

Both the departure and arrivals corridors have now been refurbished. New check-in desks have opened, the baggage system has been improved, the cafe/bar in the departure area has been moved to a more convenient place, and the road in front of the terminal building has been improved. Passengers also have easier access, with safer drop-off areas.

The improved departure lounge bar is now nearer the duty-free shop. There is more space where people can sit and relax. Dark tiles and the uninviting appearance of the arrivals area have been replaced with carpet and new decor. Outside the terminal, car parking has been expanded in time for the summer. Work is well under way on a pounds 1.8m project, funded by regional development agency One NorthEast, to provide a new access road.

This, as well as benefiting passengers and improving conditions for other motorists, will contribute greatly to the development of business opportunities on the airport estate and surrounding area. …
