LOCAL ACCOUNTING FIRMS AGREE TO MERGE

The GriggsGroup, CPAs, a Ponte Vedra Beach-based accounting firm, said it has agreed to merge with another local accounting firm, Criss & Associates. The firms said the merger will boost their combined audit and tax practices and allow them to provide additional service to clients.

GriggsGroup, which will employ more than 30 people after the merger, plans to move into a new 16,000-square-foot headquarters building under construction in Ponte Vedra Beach.

PEP BOYS REMODELS FIVE LOCAL STORES

Automotive retailer The Pep Boys said that it will host grand re-openings at each of its five remodeled Jacksonville area stores on Thursday.

The re-openings will feature special retail and service promotions, ribbon-cutting ceremonies, remote radio broadcasts, and a market-wide sweepstakes promotion, the company said in a news release.

Pep Boys plans to remodel all of its stores through 2007.

In Jacksonville, the remodeled stores' ultramodern interior design includes multimedia displays, new signs and customized areas for the new products.

JUDGE DISMISSES SOME TYCO CHARGES

NEW YORK-- The judge who will hear the larceny retrial of two former top executives of Tyco International dismissed some charges Monday related to allegations the company's former chief executive illegally dodged more $1 million in sales tax on pricey artworks, The Associated Press reported.

State Supreme Court Justice Michael Obus dropped three of the counts against Dennis Kozlowski, saying that failure to pay sales tax is not a crime in New York -- although the failure to collect it is.

Kozlowski, 57, was charged in June 2002 with evading sales taxes on $13 million worth of art by falsely claiming that five paintings by Monet, Renoir and others were shipped from New York to New Hampshire. …
