Here are some of Times-Union movie critic Matt Soergel's favorite movies in theaters:

SAVED! * * * 1/2 This mildly controversial comedy set in a Christian high school is surprisingly humane, even as it takes its often funny potshots, which will appeal to those skeptical of such schools -- as well as to many who have been to them. Its saving grace? It doesn't mock faith itself, only foolishness. PG-13.

THE STEPFORD WIVES * * Nicole Kidman stars in this jokey remake of the '70s chiller, which sometimes seems like a long Saturday Night Live sketch or even a Scary Movie-style spoof. It's a good joke, though it's really only one joke, stretched very far. PG-13.

GARFIELD * * The lazy cat slinks, grumbling, from the comics to the big screen in the person of a cleverly computer-animated creature, given surprisingly anonymous voice by Bill Murray. It's competent but uninspired and strictly for kids, though Jennifer Love Hewitt should prevent dads in the audience from napping throughout. …
