A victim left suicidal by a soon-to-be-released Tyneside rapist fears he will carry out his threat to kill her and her family.

Father-of-five George Bates, of Howdon, North Tyneside, tried to silence his then 14-year-old victim by threatening to "blow her head off " with a shotgun and wipe out her family, including her younger brother.

Now Bates, 54, is set to be released on licence next month after serving seven years, including time in custody waiting for trial.

"The thought of any of us bumping into him on the streets is terrifying us," said the victim's 42-year-old mother, who cannot be identified.

"We have been informed by the probation officers that he is coming out in July and will be placed in a hostel somewhere in Yorkshire.

"My daughter is now 23 but she still can't forget what happened to her. We're all worried he has plans to come back."

The former self-employed labourer was sentenced at Bradford Crown Court on February 23, 1998 after being found guilty of 16 offences against the girl between 1988 and 1996.

His sickening catalogue of offences included four rapes, three threats to kill, three indecent assaults, three indecent acts and causing actual bodily harm, in both Howdon and Bradford. A judge originally gave the Tyneside-born rapist sentences totalling 60 years, he ruled they should run concurrently, with Bates only serving a maximum of seven years.

An appeal court took the decision to increase his sentence to 11 years as it was "unduly lenient".

Mr Justice Douglas-Brown, sitting with Lord Justice Rose and Mr Justice Potts, said the attacks on the girl had been traumatic.

"She goes on binges, then starves herself. She has nightmares, sudden changes of mood and suicidal tendencies," he added.

Now he is due to be released on licence after the authorities deemed he had served his time. …
