Action to Highlight Ragwort Dangers

The British Horse Society's Ragwort Action Week ( highlighting poisoning from the noxious weed which condemns hundred of horses each year to a slow and agonising death ( runs from July 19-25.

The society approached MP John Greenway to introduce a Bill on Ragwort control and was the driving force behind, the Ragwort Control Act 2003.

The Bill, which received Royal Assent in November 2003, made provision for a code of practice which could be used to support legal action against landowners who did not deal effectively with ragwort.

The code, also instigated by the society and due to be published by Defra to coincide with the action week, is the first of its kind and has been subject to extensive consultation involving the horse world, local authorities, conservationists, land owners and other relevant interest groups.

During the action week the society and its strong volunteer force will be actively involved in highlighting the dangers to horses and other grazing livestock of ingesting ragwort. …
