Cliffhanger on Where Billy Will Make His Debut

The makers of the new Billy Elliot musical are fighting to keep their dreams of holding the world premiere in Newcastle alive.

Sir Elton John launched the musical, for which he has written the music, in London yesterday.

He unveiled four of the songs and said the story was very close to his heart.

But plans to premiere the musical in the North-East ( where it is set ( before its West End opening are at risk because the intended venue, Newcastle's Tyne Opera House, is in administration.

Director Stephen Daldry said he was determined it should open in the city as the musical, like the film, is set in a mining village in the North-East. Dee McCourt, publicist for Billy Elliot: The Musical said last night that the whole team behind the project was keen for a North-East premiere.

It has been an open secret that Newcastle Opera House was the favoured venue but it recently closed after the management company allegedly failed to pay rent to the owners. …
