Triple jump world champion Christian Olsson has ruled out a crack at Jonathan Edwards' world record ( for the time being at least.

The Swede is one of the superstars of world athletics and travels to Gateshead this week as a firm favourite to win at Sunday's Norwich Union British Grand Prix.

But even he admits that Edwards' incredible world record ( set nine years ago in Gothenburg ( is out of his reach for now.

Olsson is expected to take the Olympic gold medal this year to add to the European and World titles he has already claimed.

Despite that success, his personal best remains at 17.77 metres. Impressive, but still well short of Edwards' best of 18.29 metres.

Olsson said: "In my opinion Jonathan's world record is possibly the greatest there is in athletics. It is a phenomenal mark and one that may stay for many years to come.

"Of course I have ambitions to break it, but my first target is to go over 18 metres and then I can start thinking about world records. …
