Inspired by a brilliant maximum 15 points by new signing Jason Lyons, Newcastle Diamonds turned the form book on its head to beat Edinburgh at Brough Park.

The reigning Premier League champions were humbled 49-43 last night as the Diamonds put on their Sunday best.

Having been thrashed by the Monarchs 48 hours earlier, the same seven Newcastle riders who scraped together just 27 points at Armadale Stadium lifted their performance to an astonishing level to gain revenge ( and a huge confidence boost for tonight's trip to Reading.

When Edinburgh provided the winner in five of the first six races, it looked as though an all-too-familiar pattern at the Byker track this year was about to be repeated.

Lyons had provided the Diamonds' only success in that spell, winning his home debut ride in heat four, a race curtailed on the last lap when Edinburgh reserve Sean Stoddart crashed and broke a toe.

The arrival of Lyons at Brough Park has also provided inspiration for his much-maligned Australian colleague Scott Smith.

The pair stunned both sets of fans as they stormed to a 5-1 over top Monarch Peter Carr in heat seven to take the Diamonds into a 22-20 lead.

Two heats later, William Lawson rode a tenacious four laps to just hold off Rory Schlein, while Kevin Little made amends for a poor meeting on Friday by leading Carr full distance in heat 10 to keep the Diamonds four points in front.

The heat 11 clash between the two unbeaten riders, Lyons and Edinburgh skipper Frede Schott, promised much but a quick gate by the new Diamond soon showed who was boss.

Lubos Tomicek had also ridden well and joined Lyons for Newcastle's second 5-1 in heat 13 over Schlein and Schott, the latter dropping out on the penultimate lap with apparent machine trouble. …
