A Middlesbrough man who stabbed another in a late night doorstep confrontation has been jailed for four years.

Steven Sykes, 24, of Rainsford Gardens, pleaded guilty to unlawful wounding and a series of unrelated offences when he appeared at Teesside Crown Court.

The other charges included criminal damage, witness intimidation and house burglary.

Passing sentence, Recorder Aidan Marron QC told Sykes he was fortunate not to have killed the other man and be facing a much more serious charge.

Paul Newcombe, prosecuting, said the wounding victim arrived at the front door of the house where Sykes was staying in a drunken state, supposedly looking for a friend.

When Sykes shut the door in his face, said Mr Newcombe, the victim knocked again, to be confronted by Sykes, who lunged at him as he told him to go away.

It was only as the victim left the scene, said Mr Newcombe, that he put his hand into his armpit and found it covered in blood, realising he had been stabbed. …
