Waterfront homes are taking over from flagship city centre developments as the latest property hotspots, according to new research.

The boat has come in for property investors and home buyers along the banks of the Tyne and coast as the North East continues to buck the national trend of a slow-down in the market.

Experts say the knock-on effect of the housing boom in Newcastle city centre and Gateshead quayside is filtering downstream with developers fighting to create pockets of luxury urban living in areas like North Shields and Tynemouth.

According to property specialists Knight Frank, the North East is currently one of the fastest growing property hotspots in the country with investors increasingly looking to build in the region.

In 2003 the company sold a massive pounds 63m worth of property in Newcastle city centre property but is now expecting the boom will ripple out towards the coast.

Some pounds 55m has already been poured into Royal Quays in North Shields where developer Regent Homes is this week launching new pounds 10m residential scheme, Blue Quays, on the site. …
