Charlton chairman Richard Murray believes the capture of Danish winger Dennis Rommedahl is a sign of the club's increasing ambition.

Rommedahl joined the Addicks from PSV Eindhoven in a deal worth pounds 2m, agreeing a four-year contract at The Valley.

Murray claims Charlton fought off interest from a number of clubs after the 25-year-old made a series of impressive displays in Denmark's run to the Euro 2004 quarter-finals.

He said: "This is a tremendous signing. Dennis is a proven world-class player, and for us to beat off competition from other clubs in the Premiership and across Europe is a real coup.

"To sign someone of such renown can only help us as we attempt to bring in other players of quality."

Rommedahl becomes manager Alan Curbishley's third summer signing. He also secured the free transfer of Birmingham City midfielder Bryan Hughes yesterday and another Danish international, goalkeeper Stephan Andersen, signed last month from AB Copenhagen. …
