McCarthy Facing a Fight for Eliseu

Sunderland's hopes of trying to lure Portuguese prospect Eliseu Pereira to the Stadium of Light have been threatened by Belenenses' determination to hold on to him, writesLuke Edwards.

The Portuguese club's coach Augusto Inacio has told the Under-21 international forward that he will be guaranteed a starting place on the left side of a three-man attack next season.

The public nature of the statement has been designed to head off Sunderland's interest in the 20-year-old after Mick McCarthy made enquires about the player after he shone in the recent European Under-21 championship alongside Newcastle's Hugo Viana.

The Black Cats are understood to have made a tentative pounds 260,000 bid and will wait to see what Eliseu's response to his manger's promise is before deciding whether to push the deal any further.

Indeed, Sunderland may prefer to spend their limited funds on an out and out striker following the decision not to offer Darren Byfield a two year contract last week. …
