Fashion's Icons Take a Hit

Vicky Pepys gets a preview of Marks & Spencer's impending fashion `explosion'.

While Marks & Spencer boss Stuart Rose was being "grilled" over share dealing last week, creative director for clothes Yasmin Yusuf was being very gently "coddled" and congratulated.

She was presenting the new Limited Edition collection, which arrives at 66 selected UK stores ( including Newcastle and Gateshead ( in September.

The preview, at ber-chic club and restaurant Sketch in London's Conduit Street, featured clips of films projected high on the walls: Faye Dunaway in the Thomas Crown Affair, Anne Bancroft as Mrs Robinson, the fountain scene in La Dolce Vita ( iconoclastic women, celebrating the power of woman.

And perhaps the strongest trend to emerge in recent times is the celebration of the individual, wearing what we want, no-one dictating what's in and what's out.

We mix and match, hanging on to things we like and cleverly mixing new with old and storing until a garment deserves its own retro moment.

It is the kind of look epitomised by Kate Moss; some say she created it.

But in 2004 shouldn't we be looking forward rather than back all the time? And surely we should be wearing something futuristic? Who remembers drawing at school `what you think we'll be wearing in the year 2000'?

We all drew outfits with breathing apparatus, inspired no doubt by the TV series Lost in Space or Star Trek.

What we hadn't thought about was that we would still be wearing, buying and drooling over exactly what we were wearing then; the fair isle sweater, the cowl neck mohair, the sheepskin car coat, the mumsy tweed with giant pop art buttons, the glitter bobble hats and the skinny ribs. And that, in a nutshell, is what Limited Collection is all about.

It's a huge collection in three main phased deliveries starting in September, then October, and finally Christmas, with refreshing "top-ups" every three weeks.
