Northumbria Police handed out plaudits to some of its officers at the Assembly Rooms, Newcastle, last night.

PC Scott added: "We did our best in the circumstances and I'm proud for both of us to be receiving this award."

The Royal Humane Society also presented an award to Sgt Paul Reed and PC Mick Pattison for their efforts when they responded to a call of a distressed woman at Alnmouth railway station.

The woman was standing with a man and appeared to be in a distressed state. She eventually became agitated and jumped down on to the railway track.

The officers climbed down from the platform and walked on separate sides of the embankment, trying to persuade the woman to come back when a train, travelling at 100mph, appeared in the distance. …
