Do honourable thing ( and go: Teesside coroner Michael Sheffield stands defiant today as a storm rages around him. But surely it is only a matter of time before the chill winds of criticism blow him out of office. It is hard to see how this furious conflict can be settled in any other way.

Long-running concerns and anger over the length of inquest delays on Teesside came to a head with a 'severe reprimand' from the Lord Chancellor. This was followed with MPs demanding Mr Sheffield's resignation as families spoke of the anxiety and pain they had suffered. So where did that leave the coroner? It left him apparently unmoved and determined to carry on regardless.

Already our outraged MPs are stepping up their attacks. Redcar's Vera Baird has slammed Mr Sheffield's response and has taken it back to Lord Falconer. Stockton South's Dari Taylor slams the coroner for 'hanging on by his fingertips'.

And now Cleveland's Deputy Chief Constable Ron Hogg has added to the row by describing Mr Sheffield's blueprint for the future as unrealistic and unacceptable. …
