Doctor Is Accused

Article excerpt

An ear, nose and throat specialist yesterday said that with hindsight he should not have examined the groin and breasts of a Swedish woman referred to him because she was having dizzy spells.

Hossam Bassiouny told the professional conduct committee of the General Medical Council that the woman had asked him to carry out the examination but with hindsight he should not have done so.

"This examination should not have taken place, it's not our common practice to conduct such an examination," Mr Bassiouny told the hearing in London.

Mr Bassiouny, 46, of Egerton Gate, Shenley Brook End, Milton Keynes, Bucks, denies serious professional misconduct.

Earlier the woman gave her account of the May 2002 consultation at Hemel Hempstead hospital, Herts.

She had been referred there by her GP following the dizzy spells.

The hearing continues today.
