Seven weeks after undergoing back surgery, Greg Owen returned to the European tour today ( but only for a fitness test on the driving range at Loch Lomond.

While last year's British Masters champion knows he is not ready yet to make a full comeback, he has entered this weekend's 36-hole Open qualifying competition and today's practice session was to determine whether he is up to it.

"Everything has gone well since the operation, but I've still got to build my strength up and it was only last Saturday that I hit my first shots, a couple of nine-irons in a net at home," he said.

"Yesterday it was a few seven-irons and four-irons, and while I had no ill-effects from them I've got be 100% confident about hitting my driver to even think about playing at Western Gailes.

"If there's any risk then obviously I won't do it.

"It's just good to be back at an event, though. It's been very boring and frustrating watching on television since the middle of May and I've come because the accommodation had been booked and my wife and I decided we'd take a break up here even if I wasn't able to use the range. …
